Rochester Guildhall Museum

The Rochester Guildhall is one of the finest 17th-century civic buildings in Kent and boasts superb architecture and interior detail. Today, the building is a museum of local history with the centrepiece being a two-tier gallery recreating a Napoleonic prison hulk, galleries, and civic chamber with a magnificent ceiling, given in 1695 by Admiral Sir Clousley Shovell, who was a Member of Parliament for the city of Rochester at the time. Outside, mounted on the roof, is an amazing weathervane in the form of fully rigged 18th-century warship. This is 1.52m tall and weighs just under 51kg. The weathervane is made of gilded copper and lead alloy and has weathered the ever-changing climate since 1780. From Spring 2022 an exciting new attraction will be available at the museum - The Making of Mr Dickens permanent exhibition where visitors can enjoy a journey through Dickens’ life in Medway and explore the people and places that were an inspiration to create some of the best loved stories in English literature. Entry to the museum and exhibition is free of charge.
